Vodka is a clear, neutral spirit typically distilled from grains or potatoes. Known for its smoothness and versatility, it’s a staple in many cocktails and is usually unaged.

Whiskey is distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden barrels, which gives it its rich color and deep flavor. Vodka, by contrast, is filtered and unaged, with a much cleaner, lighter taste.

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and must be produced in specific regions of Mexico. It has a distinct earthy, spicy character and is available in styles like Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo.

Rum is made from sugarcane byproducts like molasses, while whiskey is made from grains. Rum tends to be sweeter and is often associated with tropical cocktails.

Cognac is a type of brandy made in the Cognac region of France, distilled from white grapes and aged in oak barrels. It’s known for its smooth, rich, and complex flavor.

All Cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is Cognac. Brandy can be made anywhere, while Cognac must meet specific production standards and come from the Cognac region in France.

Gin is a clear spirit flavored primarily with juniper berries, along with other botanicals like citrus peel, coriander, and herbs. It's crisp, aromatic, and often used in classic cocktails.

Bourbon is a type of American whiskey made primarily from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels. It's known for its sweet, full-bodied flavor with notes of vanilla and caramel.

Mezcal is also made from agave but can use different agave types and is often roasted underground, giving it a smoky flavor. Tequila is a type of mezcal but uses only blue agave and follows specific production methods.

“Anejo” means “aged” in Spanish. Anejo tequilas are aged in oak barrels for 1 to 3 years, resulting in a smoother, richer flavor compared to Blanco or Reposado.

A neutral spirit is distilled to a high proof and has little to no flavor, aroma, or color. Vodka is the most common example.

“Single malt” means the whiskey is made from malted barley at a single distillery. It’s a term most often associated with Scotch whisky.

Proof is a measure of alcohol content. In the U.S., it’s twice the percentage of alcohol by volume (ABV). So, a spirit that is 40% ABV is 80 proof.

Aging can enhance the complexity, smoothness, and character of many spirits like whiskey, tequila, and cognac. However, it depends on personal taste — some people prefer the sharpness of unaged spirits.
